Meditation is a loose term referring to any of a family of practices in which the practitioner trains their mind or self-induces a mode of consciousness in order to realise some benefit. Loosely, meditation refers to the state of the mind when you are in yoga (in union), and actually means yoga (union).

Concentration (Dhâranâ) and Meditation (Dhyâna)

Texts on râja yoga, which is said to be the ‘yoga of meditation’, say that yoga, and hence meditation, is the state that arises when you ‘still’ the fluctuations of the mind. Texts on hatha yoga, which is physical yoga, say that yoga, and hence meditation, is the state that arises when you ‘still’ the fluctuations of the breath. It is interesting to note that experienced meditation and yoga practitioners who practice breath-control (prânâyâma) in its ultimate form of breathing significantly less than normal (hypoventilation), are seen to have coherent and synchronous brain wave patterns.
